We're currently in the unit operations laboratory and we're going to take a look at some of the equipment that you might use as an undergraduate student here. This piece of equipment can be used to test a pump and test the feasibility of a pump to move fluid in a hypothetical pump situation. This piece of equipment has a whole bunch of different pipe fittings and different sized pipes allows us to evaluate friction losses through pipes and chemical engineering applications. As a chemical engineer fluid dynamics and friction is very important to understand. We are now in the pilot paper machine lab at Miami University. The machine that you're looking at is a Ford veneer machine that has been rebuilt recently in the past years. And the students are given a project to duplicate a paper this year they'll be making a cardboard box for their senior design project. This is the CPB research lab we'll take a look at a few of the areas you may work in as an undergraduate researcher. In this lab we're performing a lot of genetic modifications of bacteria bacterial cell culturing and chemical analysis. This is our brand new HPLC system. This machine allows us to analyze chemicals that may be present in our cell media. These are our bi reactor systems we currently have cells growing in them and they are fermenting to create a final product.
